Developing Interpersonal Skills
Interpersonal skills are not easily taught. It’s not something you can be taught by a good English teacher or a good philosopher. It’s an innate quality that most people possess and will have to work at developing. However, if you can develop your interpersonal skills, you can make a huge impact on your career and life. Check out these tips on developing your interpersonal skills and maximize your potential.
Be a good listener
Being a good listener is a skill that is sometimes difficult to acquire. You might have listened to a conversation between a couple but your eyes kept wandering elsewhere. Being a good listener is about listening to the person for whom you’re listening, listening intently, asking relevant questions to keep them engaged, and offering your opinion or suggestions only if asked.
Whenever you’re in a conversation, you should have some idea about what your friends are talking about. In conversations, you can either act as an interlocutor or a listener. Paying attention to what your friend is saying will help you to stay abreast of the conversation.
Maintain eye contact
Eye contact is an important skill that you should work on. Studies have shown that people perform better on tasks when they are in the presence of a person who keeps their eyes on their face. This indicates that a person who doesn’t look you in the eye won’t give you their full attention.
Interrupting a conversation will make your interlocutor feel that you don’t respect their time. If you have to interrupt, always take a break and refresh your mind. For example, if you are the teacher and you need to prepare for the lesson, and your pupil interrupts you asking a question, you can tell him, “I’m not going to answer your question because I need to answer your question first, you can come back after I finish my question.” When you’re in a conversation with someone, take time to stop and think. No one likes to be interrupted. It makes your interlocutor feel that you don’t respect his/her time. This is why it is important to respect the time of others.
Suggest an alternative way
When someone says something that contradicts your views, it’s very important to offer a valid alternative to the issue they’re bringing up. For example, if someone is debating the existence of God, you can say, “Well, you know, I’m not sure about that.” Or you can change the topic to something they are discussing.
To be tactful in a conversation, try not to bring up uncomfortable subjects. For example, you don’t want to tell your colleague that his/her work is terrible. People are reluctant to hear these kinds of things, and you would probably be met with resistance. Instead, bring up something you’re interested in or talk about a book you read. If someone comes up with a problem, try to figure out a solution to it.
Don’t blame people for your mistakes
Anytime someone tells you their opinion, you should listen to them and use it as an opportunity to learn. When someone is blaming you for a mistake you made, it makes them seem too mature. Instead, you can say, “I am really sorry about this mistake, can I use this opportunity to learn something?”
Speak your mind
Your opinion is important. Keep it to yourself if you’re not sure about it. People love having your point of view.
